THE
FAMOUS SARDINE RUN!
During the annual winter
(May/June) the migration of huge shoals of sardines
come in close to our shore, a phenomenon not seen
elsewhere in the world. This creates a fever of
excitement that cannot be equalled. Thousand upon
thousands of Cape Gannet ‘bomb’ the ocean - this
being the first sign that the ‘Sardine Run’ is on.
And if that’s not spectacular enough for you, around
3000 Bottlenose dolphins follow the migration of
the sardines northwards into KwaZulu Natal waters! http://hibiscuscoast.kzn.org.za/hibiscuscoast/2.xml
OCEAN
SAFARIS

adventure starting with the thrill of a safe surf
launch through breakers, with experienced skippers
to show you the wonders of the warm Indian Ocean
as you head past the popular St. Mikes, Uvongo and
Margate Beaches, stopping to view the shark nets.
Learn more about the function of shark nets, and
the role they play in the ecology and tourism of
our coastline.
We often encounter Bottlenose dolphins in the shallow
waters - occasionally viewing the rare Humpback
dolphins, and in the winter months we are sometimes
fortunate enough to view large groups of Common
dolphins.
Depending on weather and sea conditions, we may
head offshore to the famous Protea banks where you
could be lucky enough to view the most spectacular
of whales in South Africa’s waters - the Humpback
whale! Our area is well known for its Humpback whale,
Southern Right whale and Minke whales
