Park close to the historical and frontier towns of Underberg
and Himeville.

We travel through Himeville to the World Heritage Site of
the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, following the Mkomazana
River up the scenic Sani Valley to the South African Border
Post (border formalities). We continue up the Sani Pass
Road, which was built by David Alexander between 1948 and
1954, viewing the Hodgson’s Peaks and the old South
African Border Post.
A stop at the Good Hope Trading Post, where the history
of the trading era is explained. Climbing to an altitude
of 2874m and zig-zaging upwards beneath towering cliffs,
buttresses, past waterfalls and unique flora and bird life.
The view site offers unparalleled vistas of the 12 Apostles
of the Southern Drakensberg, Moshoeshoe’s Finger,
with the Sani Pass and spectacular Wild Protea in the background.
After having completed the border formalities on the Lesotho
Border, we arrive at the Sani Top Chalet, where we stop
for a hearty lunch.
A visit to an authentic Basotho Mountain Village is included.
Descending the Sani Pass in the afternoon, the excitement
grows, passing through the 20 hairpin bends of the steepest
section of the Pass. One is reminded of the fact that the
Sani Pass originated as a mule track linking one to another
world, where life is untouched by civilization. Arrival
in Underberg at the Thaba Tours office in the late afternoon.
Lesotho - Kingdom in the Sky
Experience one of the few remaining unspoiled wonders in
Africa. Lesotho with its majestic mountain beauty is the
only country in the world with all of its territory lying
over 1200m above sea level, just waiting to be explored
by you!
It has the highest mountain in Southern Africa, Thabana
Ntlenyana (3.482m), the highest road in Africa, Tlaeeng
Pass (3.255m) and the highest single drop waterfall in Southern
Africa, Maletsunyane Fall (197m).
From the lowlands with its forests and wild flowers in
the west, the land rises to the grassland mountains in the
east. The traditional dress, the Basotho conical hat and
blankets, are still worn everywhere in this ethnical country.
Visitors may see San Rock paintings and dinosaur footprints
in this virgin terrain, accessible only on foot or by horseback.
Trips across mountain ranges into valleys with spectacular
waterfalls, crystal clear rivers and craft markets which
offer wool and mohair weaving, sheepskin products, tapestries
etc.
For the outdoor enthusiast we offer pony trekking, hiking,
bird watching and mountain biking.
Accommodation facilities range from hotels to lodges to
self-catering chalets and backpackers.
