Where to stay
Port Edward
Bounded by the spectacular Umtamvuna River Gorge and its
lush forest. The Old Pont is popular for wakeboarding and
water skiing. Idyllic beaches are popular with surfers and
fishermen. Visit the alien Red Desert and snorkel amongst
fossilized trees. Amadiba Trails run horse riding and hiking
trails into the Wild Coast.
Trafalgar
Trafalgar is a quiet village with a long, sandy beach. The beach has sharks
nets and is a good surf spot. Snorkel Trafalgar Marine Reserve with its fossils
of petrified wood and shellfish. There are also several hiking trails in the
neighbouring Mpenjati Nature Reserve.
Southbroom
A town of eco-conscious residents who have protected the
pristine condition of their coastal dunes. This makes for
a pleasant walk between Southbroom’s two swimming
beaches where you can cool off in one of two tidal pools.
Port Shepstone to Hibberdene
A 30km stretch along the R102 dotted with clean and lazy
beaches used mostly by locals walking their dogs, rock fishermen
waiting for a bite and the early-morning surfer bobbing
the waves.
Spot fish eagles, monitor lizards and monkeys while leisurely
paddling the Umtentweni River. Umzumbe is nestled in thick
and wild dune forest.
