Midlands Backpacker Hostels

Green, gently rolling pastures and pine forests. The Midlands is genteel and olde worlde with art and craft galleries and antique shops. Battles were fought here amongst the Boer, British and Zulu impis. The Midlands is a good gateway to the Drakensburg, Lesotho and the Wild Coast.

Where to stay

Richmond

A quiet farming community with a English county atmosphere. Visit the 80m Qunu or ‘thunder’ falls in the Qunu Forest Reserve. (1 Hostel)

Pietermaritzburg

The traveller often wrongly overlooks Pietermaritzburg. It is genteel and historic. Mahatma Gandhi began his legal apprenticeship here. It is also a good place to begin any adventures into the 'olde worlde' Midlands region and the uKhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site.

Pietermaritzburg is the starting or ending point of the Comrades Marathon – a gruelling 90km raced between here and Durban on 16 June. ( 2 Hostels)
