Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour
The Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour© is a unique eco-wilderness adventure that takes place in the magnificent Tsitsikamma indigenous rainforest.
The first of its kind in Africa, the canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 30 meters above the forest floor. Most platforms are built high up in the giant Outeniqua Yellowwoods. The scenery and bird life is spectacular and professional guides provide interesting facts about the forest ecology during the 2½ to 3 hours.
What happens
The tour begins with a detailed safety briefing followed by a 'kitting up' session where full body harness, pulleys and climbing equipment is issued and checked. A short drive into the Tsitsikamma forest, and it is time to monkey around! A new world unfolds as you gently glide from the launch platform along a steel cable to the first tree platform. Groups are led through the forest canopy by the lead guide. The follow guide ensures your safety as you slide from tree to tree. The platforms, built high trees, provide an unbelievable view of this enchanting new world. Any fear of heights is soon lost in the awe of the surroundings...
The Tsistikamma Canopy Tour© consists of 10 platforms and 10 'fufi' slides, the longest of which is 100m! About three hours later you exit the forest, having undertaken the journey of a lifetime. You have contributed to the creation of new jobs and are helping the forest regeneration project.
Woodcutters Journey
Join us on a journey down the old Storms River pass, and experience the indigenous forest from the comfort of a specially designed vehicle.
Follow the elephant trail down to the water, passing tree ferns, stinkwoods, yellow woods and many other tree species. Learn about the history of the area and the local flora and fauna. Watch out for a glimpse of the elusive Narina Trogan and the inquisitive Knysna Loerie who enjoys the shade under the leafy canopy.
Stop and relax where wagons, since the last century, have and enjoy a light lunch or tea next to the Storms River.
Departure times vary to meet your schedules, with a variety of food menus available on request.
Responsible Tourism
There is a positive impact in the Tsitsikamma region as it has gained international exposure. We are involved in the following community projects:
School Feeding Scheme
SRA has provided 4 meals per week to 200 primary school children for the past 8 years. Many of these kids do not receive a decent daily meal at home. Meals are delivered to the local primary school and are supplied by our empowerment catering company who are paid by SRA.
Animal Welfare and Education
We run a community based animal welfare project which involves dog dipping, mange treatment, de worming, sterilization and animal trauma treatment. Pet food is also supplied to the needy. The prime objective of the program is to teach the kids how to care for their animals and to give them a sense of caring and belonging. The positive spin-off has been tangible as these kids are now caring for the brothers and sisters in a positive manner.120 Sterilizations have been done to date, 300 dippings and 100 mange treatments are conducted per year.
HIV and AIDS education and awareness
SRA has initiated an extensive internal program to address the AIDS issue. This initiative is now being extended to the community by way of staff volunteers who will assist with education and counseling to the school and the broader community. The team is called the WE CARE MOVEMENT and is an outreach action which hopefully will turn the tide of the pandemic in our village.
Other initiatives
Environmental Education and awareness which involves taking 1200 children per annum on our excursions for free. Clothing collection and distribution to the poorest of the poor. Assisting local crafters and marketing their crafts through our small retail outlet.
