Mehloding Adventure Trail Affiliations

Mehloding Adventure Trails offers one to four day hiking trails in the Southern Drakensberg on the border of Lesotho, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. The rich natural and cultural heritage of this area is barely explored and a trail through the mountain foothills will reveal rural villages and undocumented rock art.

The gateway for this trail is the quaint town of Matatiele, 70km from Kokstad. The trail then leads into the foothills through villages to rock art sites, indigenous forests, streams and great viewpoints. The area is also good for birdwatching. You can also visit the villagers and a local craft project.

Accommodation

Rest in pretty traditional rondavels, each with hot showers, flush toilets, a dining room and a kitchen. Most of the overnight stops have dormitories and twin rooms. Linen and towels are provided.

Meals

Breakfast, dinner and tea/coffee are provided on the trail.

Community Tourism in action

Mehloding Community Tourism Trust represents more than 25 villages in the area. The Trust owns Mehloding Adventure Trail and the nearby Masakala Traditional Guesthouse. Employees of Masakala Guesthouse live within 5km of the establishment. Staff training includes first aid, housekeeping and tour guiding. Masakala purchases goods and services within an 8 km radius and has an organic vegetable garden. Soil and water conservation is practiced on site and recycling is done wherever possible. Tour guides teach herders to identify and preserve rock art. Masakala aims to educate locals regarding the preservation and sustainable harvesting of indigenous medicinal plants.
