Calabash Tours has been offering ethical, informative and fun social history tours of Port Elizabeth since 1997. These tours take you on a journey of discovery, from the harsh realities of our apartheid past, to the great triumphs of the current democratic South Africa. Our tours are well researched, developed with community consent, and give you a great insight into South Africa today. And they’re great fun!

Tours depart daily at 10:00a.m and 4:00p.m. We do pick-ups and drop-offs from backpacker hostels, guesthouses and hotels.

Real City Tour

Travel safely with our experienced and knowledgeable guides to get a perspective of South Africa different from the sophisticated, almost westernised places you may have visited before you got to Port Elizabeth.

Itinerary:

  • Original 19th Century English Settler homes
  • The main shopping thoroughfare where street traders sell their wares
  • The building where Steve Biko was interrogated before his fateful journey to death
  • Kwazakhele, Zwide and New Brighton townships to experience a slice of African life
  • Red Location, the oldest township in South Africa
  • A community run school for children in the township. Proceedings from this tour help fund this school
  • Township-style tea in one of the community run projects we support
  • Meet talented township artists at work in Ramaphosa Village, an informal settlement, where wonderful works ranging from paintings, to lino prints, pottery and woven wall hangings are on display

Shebeen Tour

The township version of the pub, Shebeens are where locals meet to enjoy themselves. The entertainment involves some drinks, some music and dancing at times. Travel safely with our experienced and knowledgeable guides on a fun evening in a Shebeen. The hospitality is memorable, the traditional food yummy and the drinks cheap!

Addo Tour

Addo National Park is home to a wide range of animals, but most famously, elephants. The rest of the Big 5: lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino can also be spotted here.
