Khotso Mountain Lodge & Horse Trails

Explore the 'Wild West' of Africa. Steve, your guide into the wilderness may not sport a cheroot between his lips like Clint Eastwood, but his pony trails are as exciting as any spaghetti western.

• Khotso Backpackers

The adventure starts at Khotso Backpackers in the Southern Drakensberg. The fresh air and the scent of horses mingle sharply on this working farm.
Once the saddle bags are packed, Khotso's sure-footed and patient Basotho ponies lead the trek from Bushman's Neck. The journey crosses lush veld, green valleys, clear streams and waterfalls. Steve points out the Bushmen paintings along the way.

This expedition can take between 2-5 days. Some nights are spent in remote Basotho villagers where there's always hot water and a warm bed. Steve, always the entertainer, thrills with fireside tails of cattle and horse rustling.

• Khotso Mountain Lodge

The trek peaks at Khotso Mountain Lodge in Sehlabathebe at a height of 2500m. Beers, baths and home cooking are rewards well earned.
Not a rider? A 4X4 trip to Sehlabathebe is less effort but just as fun.
