Resting on a hill overlooking Plettenberg Bay’s beautiful beaches, Stone Cottage has 180° sea views from the Outeniqua Mountains to the Robberg Peninsula. Passionately restored, this historic guesthouse offers comfortable suites and a boutique backpackers that has been a warm and welcoming home on the road for guests. Offering a relaxed and eclectic elegance, the house is filled with reclaimed treasures, art, memorabilia and a sense of humour. Many have found solace Stone Cottage’s quietly quirky and creative atmosphere.

If you are looking for absolute privacy and perfection this might not really be for you, but if creative shabby-chic is your thing, you'll love it.

Creaky timber floors and doors, high beamed ceilings, old-fashioned kitchens, temperamental lights and water, Victorian beds and wafty white curtains, old rattan chairs, sagging but comfy couches, black and white photos of life as it once was, other nostalgic memorabilia that could have come with the first wagon, spectacular views of the bay and a communal deck with jacuzzi, are the order of the day.

Of the various options, the newer two-sleeper units edge close to to luxury, while Oupa Jannie backpackers, forming part of the main house, is a lot more casual. This Ernest Hemingway retreat consists of the main house (occupied by Annie-the-artist) and three self-catering apartments on the same property: Boetie Pierre (4), the Hilda Room (2) and Leonard Room (2) and the new Oupa Jannie upmarket backpackers (sleeps 12).

The only flipside to this sanctuary is the sound of traffic whizzing past just below the apartments. But this warning aside we still think Stone Cottage is fabulous, as does a chain of previous visitors. Annie's blurb more or less sums it up: “Stone Cottage is a home away from home for many guests who enjoy the simple, relaxed and rustic atmosphere of barefoot living… No frills or luxuries, just essence.

From the N2 Shell petrol station outside Plettenberg Bay, drive in to town along Marine Drive to the Dolphin Circle in Mainstreet. Go over the the circle, carry on with Odland Steet, downhill towards the beach. After the Dolphin Circle, Harker Street is the 3rd road on your right. We are on the corner of Odland and Harker Streets.

Boetie Pierre Cottage

Boetie Pierre Cottage was designed and built in sympathy of the Old Stone Cottage and is furnished with old and new eg: Original old doors, antique family furniture, old photographs and a few new pieces create a simple yet crisply rustic atmosphere with spectacular sea views. Spacious 1 bedroom apartment with a King size four poster bed with crisp white linen, en-suite shower & WC. Open plan fully equipped kitchen, lounge/ dining room with fireplace and covered veranda with 180 degree sea views. Extra bed available.Barbeque facilities outside. Serviced daily. Garden access to backpackers, jacuzzi & cummunal deck.

Oupa Jannie Backpacker Dorms

Oupa Jannie backpackers will be opening on 1 June 2012.

Oupa Jannie Dorm Rooms is situated in the Ground floor area of the Old Stone Cottage. It has an authentic old west coast atmosphere. It consists of dorms sleeping 6 each. The Cottage has a fully-equipped kitchen and cummunal lounge. It has a semi-outside reed enclosed shower overlooking the sea and bathroom with Victorian bath, WC and washbasin with lots of Fresh air. The Oupa Jannie Cottage walks out into the garden with the communal sundeck and jacuzzi overlooking Central Beach and the Beacon Island Hotel.
