Where is Masakala...?

Masakala is a friendly rural village close to Matatiele on the border of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. It offers a stunning view of the Southern Drakensberg and a chance to discover the warm-heartedness of the Sotho and Xhosa people.

Accommodation

Masakala Traditional Guesthouse has two rondavels built following the local architectural style - a circular or square hut with a peaked thatched roof. We have single, double or dormitory accommodation. Traditional yet comfortable, the accommodation has four beautifully decorated rooms, hot showers and a bath. Masakala has been awarded an AA Quality Assurance grading.

Meals

Enjoy a meal prepared by the local catering group - home grown vegetables, fresh produce and African recipes are on the menu, alongside conventional fare. We also cater for vegetarians on request.

Activities at Masakala

  • Guided walking tours to rock art treasures
  • Bird watching
  • Horse riding on a Basotho pony (suitable for beginners or advanced riders)
  • Visit a local project and meet the crafters
  • Village tour that includes meeting local sangomas and traditional entertainment
  • Or you can simply rest and enjoying the place in peace

Community Tourism in action

Mehloding Community Tourism Trust represents more than 25 villages in the area. The Trust owns Masakala Traditional Guesthouse and a nearby adventure trail. Employees of Masakala Guesthouse live within 5km of the establishment. Staff training includes first aid, housekeeping and tour guiding. Masakala purchases goods and services within an 8 km radius and has an organic vegetable garden. Soil and water conservation is practiced on site and recycling is done wherever possible. Tour guides teach herders to identify and preserve rock art. Masakala aims to educate locals regarding the preservation and sustainable harvesting of indigenous medicinal plants.
