Arriving at Karma is like coming home. A warm welcome, big comfortable beds, a well-stocked communal kitchen, braai facilities and a beautiful garden with a view of Sentinel Peak make this lodge something special. Eat as much home-made Karma jam as you like and pick your own salad from Karma’s veggie garden - all for free.
Things to do from Karma
- Karma is the backpackers nearest to the Amphitheatre Hike, less than an hour’s drive away. Start at Sentinel Car Park, climb up the famed chain ladders, walk to where the Tugela falls almost a kilometre, then walk on to Mont-aux-Sources. Free maps and info are available from us.
- Golden Gate National Park is also nearby. Take some wine and enjoy watching the sunset, or go for a hike and you might see eland, zebra, wildebeest or springbok as you walk.
- Royal Natal National Park is a bit further from Karma, but ancient Bushman paintings and Clarens are less than an hour away. More free maps are provided.
- On Lolo’s Township Tour, you can go on a bicycle ride through the township, visit and talk to people, have a drink at the shebeen and visit a sangoma (traditional healer).
- Day tours to Lesotho, as well as guided self-drive Zulu cultural tours to the Injisuthi Valley in conjunction with Inkosana Lodge & Trekking.

Its such a peaceful place without disturbing noices. Very unusual for a backpacker was the well equiped kitchen. You can find there sharp knifes, nice pans and even a dishwasher. We liked all the selfmade stuff, like mosaik tables, selfmade quiltblankets and of course the varity of award winning jam every morning. And don't forget the nice vegetable garden where you can help yourself.
The patience of the owners while they are showing everybody what kind of trips you can do in this wonderful enviroment was as in an exemplary manner as the tidyness of the hole place.
I also want to mention the sozial responsibility of the owners. They try to help the local community to create their own buisness by sewing nice dresses for children.
I know this sounds a bit too good, but that really was the experience we made.
