FRIENDLY, HELPFUL FANTASTIC

Amphitheatre Backpackers must have the most wonderful view in the country. The mountains wrap themselves around the garden stretching all the way to infinity. They were busy building a fantastic deck looking out over their "lawn" (300 hectares of to-die-for scenery.) It is yet another amazing addition to this incredible place. Everywhere are carvings and lovely things to look at. The owner was very helpful when we arrived and when I explained that we had been on the road for quite a while and just wanted to do something by ourselves she was so helpful and gave us loads of information, even a self-drive map that she had painstakingly put together with highlights and places to stop as well as lovely day walks. they also help people without cars to get to and from the towns and parks with various shuttle services which seemed helpful. The room was a delight with the most comfortable and CLEAN mattresses. We decided to extend our stay and went on two of their fab trips. They are really a MUST as they include EVERYTHING for the full day with very informative guides. You are not just paying for the safety and transport (I am glad we didn't have to drive up those hectic roads) but for guides that are really passionate about their job! we visited an untouched part of Lesotho. I was worried that I would feel voyeuristic, but all interaction with local people was very natural and they took us to the most beautiful caves with paintings and stunning scenery. Then we also did the Tugela Falls/ Amphitheatre trip with them which is definitely my all-time FAVORITE hike to date, honestly,,,, and TAKE THE GUIDED trip... we walked right through a blanket of cloud and POP we emerged looking out over the 2nd highest waterfall in the world and then woop the cloud swept aside and we all took a step back.......... WOW what a view. Worth every penny.

A PLACE NOT TO BE MISSED!

We have recently spent 3 days at Amphitheatre Backpackers! Wow it was such fun! Each day we went out on trips to Lesotho, The Tugela Falls/ Amphitheatre also rock-climbing and Cathedral Summit. The guides were very experienced and even though we have hiked extensively back home these guys know what they are doing. I would not have done the stuff that we did without their help. I am not a big drinker (despite what they say about us Australians) but their bar was so beautifully decorated that you didn't need alcohol to enjoy it, what with the jacuzzi and sauna and everywhere travelers chatting and swopping stories. The rooms are very clean and neat and all the staff is so friendly and accommodating. This was by far the highlight of my trip to SA... well done guys keep it up!!!

great location, bad service, agressive

We went to this place on the advice of one of our friends. In the time we have been they were reconstructing the main building.
Immediately at the arrival the owner had a wonderfull story and photos about their daytrips to Lesotho and Amphitheatre. It was not possible to go their by yourself, as she said. It was one of the last days of our 6-weeks trip and although it was very expensive in our opinion we did make the booking for both trips. The first trip was to Lesotho. The trip was ok but definitely to expensive! (500 Rand pp; 50E pp) We expected much more of it because of the story she told us. So we cancelled our daytrip to Amphitheatre for the next day as well as more people of our group. The owner of the backpackers became very agressive and angry. "What was our problem?" The next day we went for a hike by ourselfs in the Royal Natal National Park. Very nice!! Unfortunately in the morning we had a totally flat battery of our car and we had to wait for 3 hours (in the meanwhile the owner made a lot of false promises, and quotes like "they are not a garage", "it was not HER problem") before a employee helped us. In a word: very bad service for their customers. They are very money minded!!
We stayed in a private double room. The cleansed of the room was not very well. The overal facillities are okee.
